Developing international standards for fusion

Fusion energy is moving from research to reality, and building a safe, sustainable, and scalable fusion industry requires both technical standards and strong collaboration across the sector.

We are proud to share that our colleague Dr. Marc Breisch has been elected Project Lead for shielding materials within the fusion standardization committees Design and Operation of Fusion Facilities, under the German Institute for Standardization (DIN).

In this role, Marc will help lead the development of international standards supporting the safe and sustainable operation of tritium laboratories and future fusion facilities. The work covers key areas such as safety classification, material qualification, tritium containment, ventilation and safety systems, radiation protection, and sustainability considerations including waste minimization and material recyclability.

As fusion technologies continue to mature, international standards will play a vital role in enabling safe deployment and industrial scale-up.

The discussion continues at the Nordic Fusion Forum in Copenhagen on October 19, hosted by Novatron Fusion Group and St1. Studsvik will join policymakers, industry leaders, scientists, and investors to explore how the Nordic region can help accelerate fusion development and strengthen its position in next-generation energy innovation.

As a strategic partner of the event, we are especially looking forward to our CEO, Karl Thedeen, taking part in the panel discussion “Nordics and Europe in the Global Fusion Race.”

Congratulations to Marc on this important appointment. We look forward to contributing to the future of fusion energy through both international standardization and industry collaboration. See you in Copenhagen!
