First SMR application under new legislation submitted in Sweden

The company Kärnfull Next, previously announced to be acquired by Studsvik, today submitted the first-ever SMR (Small Modular Reactor) application under Sweden’s new legislation requiring government approval for nuclear facilities.

The application covers the establishment of an SMR park in Valdemarsvik Municipality and was officially handed over to Johan Britz, Minister for Employment and acting Minister for Climate and Environment.

Karl Thedéen, CEO and President of Studsvik, highlights the significance of this milestone:

“This is an exciting step toward establishing SMR parks in Sweden, supporting the journey toward stable and fossil-free energy production. Valdemarsvik is the first municipality in the process, but we are also exploring additional locations across Sweden, including our own site in Nyköping. Kärnfull Next and Studsvik look forward to submitting further applications to the government during the year. The combination of Studsvik’s technical capabilities and Kärnfull Next’s project development puts us in a great position to create a strong platform to develop new nuclear power plants projects in Sweden”
