Studsvik is a 15 % shareholder of the UKNWM management consortium which operates the UK’s Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

LLW Repository Ltd is a waste management company that provides services to customers to treat and dispose of low level radioactive waste in the UK, based in West Cumbria. It manages the national Low Level Waste Repository in West Cumbria on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and oversees the National LLW Programme to ensure that lower activity waste is managed effectively across the UK

Studsvik is an active owner, alongside AECOM (75 %) and Areva (10 %) of the Parent Body Organisation, UK Nuclear Waste Management Ltd (UKNWM), which operates the LLW Repository. UKNWM have operated under contract to the NDA since 2008, with a total contract length of up to 17 years. As the Parent Body of the LLW Repository, the consortium provides leadership, governance, strategic guidance and a seconded team of individuals into LLWR Ltd. Studsvik has a particular interest in providing technical support, in the fields of national LLW strategy and implementation of LLWR’s work programme. Studsvik’s involvement has included:  

  • Leadership and governance
  • National Waste Program development and implementation
  • Regulatory support 
  • Waste inventory analysis 
  • Business case development and project execution 
  • Consignor support  

The work which LLWR has delivered, under the leadership and guidance of UKNWM, has transformed the way in which low level waste is managed across the UK nuclear industry, saving hundreds of millions pounds for the NDAestate. Relationships have been strengthened through positive relationships with the local community, regulators and other stakeholders. LLWR is recognised internationally as leading the way in which radioactive waste can be managed. Studsvik, working with its partners AECOM and Areva, has been instrumental in driving this change.
