“Helping our customers in unique and custom ways”
Daniel Jädernäs has just returned to Studsvik after spending two years as a Senior Scientist and Group Lead at the Idaho National Laboratory in the US. During his previous eight years in Studsvik he specialized in microstructural characterization of irradiated materials, predominantly using electron microscopy.
Can you describe what your role in Studsvik includes?
“My main task is to develop techniques for characterizing irradiated materials and nuclear fuel and support the rest of the organization within this field of work. Another part is keeping track of the developments in the field by interacting with utilities, vendors, authorities and collaborators. I really enjoy the challenge to interpret data from the microscopy lab to put them into context and gain mechanistic understanding of phenomenon related to e.g. corrosion, hydriding and irradiation damage.”
Describe something Studsvik has supported a customer with that you are especially proud of.
“We were one of the first laboratories in the world who invested in the focused ion beam technology for characterization of nuclear materials. This capability at Studsvik has provided the worldwide nuclear community with new and exciting results from research that was not possible to obtain before. The same goes for electron backscatter diffraction where Studsvik performed some pioneering work. Helping our customers in unique and custom ways is something that I believe permeate Studsvik as a company.”
Tell us a great thing about Studsvik?
“When a new opportunity comes in Studsvik’s way, our first reaction is yes we can do it! The mix of competences is really fantastic, and our ambition is always to attack problems in a new way using current and novel techniques in an innovative way.”
What is on your wish list workwise?
“I am somewhat of a materials nerd and a lot of initiatives on new innovative materials concepts for nuclear applications has been started the last few years. With our capabilities in our labs and together with our partners I can see Studsvik and myself supporting this development and thereby contributing to having even safer and more efficient nuclear materials.”
