“Studsvik is really a place where ideas are shared, improved and realized!”

Joakim Lundström grew up with his parents and a younger brother in a small village in the northern part of Sweden. None in his family was surprised when Joakim started studying Engineering Physics at Luleå Technical university since his interest in how things work has been very strong from early age. He joined Studsvik in 2002 as Radio Physicist and after several different management positions he is the President for Fuel & Materials Technology since 2018.

Can you describe what your role in Studsvik includes?

“As President for Fuel & Materials Technology I´m responsible for Studsvik´s hot cell business. I´m also license holder for the nuclear facilities and thereby responsible for all site operations including safety & security.”

Describe something Studsvik has supported a customer with that you are especially proud of.

“I´m very proud of Studsvik´s capability of providing innovative and efficient solutions. There are many examples, but one that really stands out is setting up the tie bar testing with associated transports from the UK and then operating it successfully for a decade. Also, the failed fuel treatment of Oskarshamn power plant where we, for the first time, performed an industrialized project in our R&D hot cells, transporting drying and encapsulating 300 fuel rods in two years, shows our ability to utilize core competences and assets to help customers achieve their goals.

Tell us a great thing about Studsvik?

“Studsvik is really a place where ideas are shared, improved and realized! I really appreciate the global competence we have in the company with more than 15 nationalities working together creating a unique state of the art R&D operation. It really makes me proud to go to work!”

What is on your wish list workwise?

“I would love to see Studsvik continue its journey and develop as a business even further. Entering the isotope production segment, continuing to develop back-end solutions helping to solve difficult high-level waste problems while at the same time keep developing core business with fuel and materials R&D is an interesting and fun challenge. If on top of this, we could also have some new international partners establishing business on our unique site that would be great!”
