Mechanical Testing

Published: 11 February 2011
Cladding and structural materials are affected by radiation and the operating environment and this changes their properties. Using mechanical testing carried out in the Irradiated Materials Laboratory, irradiated structural materials and cladding can be characterized and different operating conditions and transients can be simulated

A series of different methods which have been specially developed for testing cladding specimens from commercial fuel rods are available in the Laboratory. The methods for testing irradiated cladding include:

  • Pin loading testing – studies of delayed hydride cracking
  • Ring clamp testing – studies of mechanical properties
  • Creep testing – studies of relaxation and creep properties
  • Mandrel testing – studies of iodine-induced stress corrosion
