When a U.S. nuclear power plant needed a spent fuel crane off-site immediately, there was no time to waste. While Studsvik’s response time was impressive, the processing results make this project even more noteworthy.
Recycling in the nuclear industry requires great care to ensure material is safe for reuse. As a result, most radioactive waste processors do not recycle. For Studsvik, it is essential to minimize the impact of nuclear power on society and the environment. Experience and a culture of safety make this challenge a reality at the Studsvik Processing Facility Memphis (SPFM). This recent crane project demonstrates how recycling impacts disposal volume.
95% was free-released and recycled, leaving only 17,500 pounds for disposal through Studsvik’s Bulk Survey For Release (BSFR) program.
The 350,000 pound (175 short ton) overhead crane needed to be dismantled and shipped off-site within one month. Ten days after notification, waste containers arrived at the site. A Studsvik Large Component Engineer was on-site shortly thereafter to manage the project over a two week period. The steady pace continued at SPFM where processors free released one crane piece per day.
A large percentage of nuclear large components are candidates for recycling. Even components that cannot wholly be recycled can benefit from volume and weight reduction through processing. This allows clients to rest assured that they are responsibly handling their large components for future generations.
